2019 Green-Up Day Contest
The Georgeson Botanical Garden Society and ThrivAlaska are partnering to celebrate the arrival of Spring with the 2019 Green-Up Day Contest. Buy a ticket and guess the first day of “green-up” on the Chena Ridge!
Green-Up Day is determined by the National Weather Service (NWS) and is defined as the first day when “leaf buds in birch and aspen open just enough to produce a faint but distinct green flush through the forest canopy.” The tradition began in 1974 when scientists on the West Ridge of the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus looked out on the eastern flank of Chena Ridge to see the Spring’s first hint of green. Now, this NWS-declared day is part of a FUNdraising contest!
Tickets are available at various locations around town and may be purchased between March 22nd and midnight on April 22nd. You may also buy tickets at the Georgeson Botanical Garden office at 117 West Tanana Drive – call (907)841-4907 for directions.
